Einstein was a socialist

Filed under: — Elissa Smith @ 4:37 pm

My friend sent me this link about Einsteins’ politics. I didn’t realize he was radical!

He was a vegetarian just like me (if only for the last year of his life). “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life onearth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” Albert Einstein

Millennium Ecosystem Assessment:

Filed under: — Elissa Smith @ 1:25 pm

I try not to talk like a depressing environmentalist but this Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is just to big for the majority of the planets population to ignore.

According to the report:
- organisms are disappearing at 100 to 1,000 times the “background levels” seen in the fossil record
- a third of all amphibians, a fifth of mammals and an eighth of all birds are threatened with extinction
- some 35% of mangroves and about 20% of corals have gone.

Climate Change and Human Settlements

Filed under: — Elissa Smith @ 4:09 pm

My friend just sent me this article I wrote months ago and totally forgot about. It’s short and sweet and to the point!
Youth Challenge Ministers to Act on Climate Change or Human Settlements will Perish!

Schwerpunkt: Internationale Umweltbewegung

Filed under: — Elissa Smith @ 11:00 pm

After an interview with the editor of the “Bundeskoordination Studentischer Ökologiearbeit”, a German environmental students newspaper, this article was written. It’s an oversimplification of the environmenal youth situation in “Kanada”. My favourite part is “ass-embly” :)

Report on Youth and the Millennium Development Goals

Filed under: — Elissa Smith @ 6:45 pm

MDG Youth Report Now Available for Review: Feedback Requested!
www.mdgyouthpaper.org

I would like to invite you to provide feedback to the Interim Report “Youth and the Millennium Development Goals: Challenges and Opportunities for Implementation”. The final draft of the document is expected to be completed in February 2005 so that it can be used as a lobbying tool and guideline for the 5-year review of the MDGs.

The goals of the report is to overview youth participation in the MDGs as it currently exists to
a) outline ways that youth are involved and affected by each goal;
b) demonstrate ways in which young people are currently contributing to the goals;
c) provide ‘Options for Action’ that governments, the United Nations system, donors and other actors can take in order to support young people in making significant contributions to achieving the goals.

Is Humanity Fatally Successful?

Filed under: — Elissa Smith @ 12:35 am

“This is an article by Dr. William Rees, late of the University of British Columbia School of Planning and the originator of the concept of the “ecological footprint”. He has been forced to the conclusion as have many of us, that “industrial civilization” is not sustainable; that the developed countries must change their economies and societies to a different pattern(s). I may be putting words in his mouth to a certain extent but this is the implication. He discusses the fundamental causes of our problems. Dr. Rees manages to bring these very basic problems to attention in an uniquely tactful way, so that he is more effective than anyone I know in presenting these issues in a way that makes it difficult for those to whom they are new, to dismiss them. I recommend this article highly, its excellence and importance cannot be overstated.”
